There is more to Lavender than meets the eye!

As a qualified aromatherapist I love using many different types of oils (always organic and pure) and blends for various treatments. One of my favourite blend is Lavender, Bergamot and Lime. A great combination for a relaxing but also uplifting treatment. Bergamot has a sweet but fruity aroma and is a great anti-spasmodic oil but is also good for supporting the digestive system. Lime is an energising and fresh oil with anti-bacterial properties. Put together with the wonderful lavender it makes for a gorgeous blend.

There are many benefits to using lavender oil (latin name of Lavare which means ‘to wash’ due to its aroma). It is known to help eliminate nervous tension, relieve pain, disinfect, enhance blood circulation and treat respiratory problems.

Lavender oil is extracted mostly from the flowers of the lavender plant, primarily through steam installation. It blends well with many other essential oils so as well as using in a massage oil, I also use it when making my hand creams, sniff bottles and especially for my animal soaps as perfect for all skin types. The more they use the soap, the closer they get to the toy – but as well as a bit of fun, using lavender will hopefully calm them down for bed too!

There are various health benefits of using lavender essential oil including:

Anti-inflammatory – so great for those awful mosquito bites (I really do hate all mosquitos!) but is also a perfect oil to use for burns. I had a burn on my wrist last month from taking something out of the oven (not very carefully clearly) and after putting my wrist under cold running water I rubbed a few drops of lavender oil into my skin. The burning sensation disappeared and prevented my skin blistering too.

Sleep – lavender oil is known to induce sleep so a common recommendation for an alternative treatment for insomnia. Simply pop a few drops onto your pillow.

Calming – excellent tonic for the nerves and anxiety issues as lavender has a calming scent. Also helpful in treating migraines, headaches, depression, nervous tension and emotional stress. The refreshing aroma removes nervous exhaustion and restlessness while also increasing mental activity. Simply pop a few drops onto a handkerchief or tissue and inhale.

Pain Relief – known as an excellent remedy for various types of pains including those caused by tense and sore muscles. A massage with lavender oil will certainly be relaxing!

Respiratory disorders – lavender oil is widely used for various respiratory problems including flu, coughs, colds, asthma and sinus congestion. The oil can be used as a vapour or applied to the skin on the neck, chest and back.

Skin care – the health benefits of lavender oil for the skin can be attributed to its antiseptic properties. Used to help treat various skin disorders, it is commonly used to speed up the healing process of wounds, cuts and burns. Lavender can also be added to chamomile cream to help treat eczema.

You may wish to blend with other oils but do speak to a qualified aromatherapist first as some oils can be extremely dangerous when used. Lavender is one of the few oils that can be used neat on the skin but of course must be used in moderation. The majority of other essential oils must be diluted first. As with many essential oils, pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid using ALL essential oils.

Lavender – the miracle oil – everyone should have some in their cupboard!
